Mix & Match Dog Leash: How to Build Your Own

A Mix & Match dog leash isn't a standard leash — you build it yourself. Collar, leash, bandana in your favorite color world, with the material that suits your dog. Here's the honest guide: how the system works, which components you need, which material fits when, and how to assemble your first set in 5 minutes. Plus: why 100+ combinations emerge from just a few building blocks ♡

What is a Mix & Match dog leash?

A Mix & Match dog leash is a modular leash you assemble yourself from individual building blocks. Instead of buying one ready-made leash, you combine:

  • A handle (top section) — the part you hold
  • A bottom section — the swappable piece between carabiner and collar
  • A collar — matching the leash in the same style world

The connection: a high-quality brass carabiner. With it you swap components in 3 seconds — short city leash today, hands-free hiking leash tomorrow, the dressy version in a different color world for the weekend. One investment, many looks.

At RudisRudel we developed the system exactly for this: maximum flexibility, minimal hallway chaos. Julia handcrafts every component, Rudi handles quality control 🐕.

The 3 components explained

1. The handle (top section)

The handle is the piece you hold. With us, two main variants:

  • Short handle (Kurzführer) — a short, fixed handle. Perfect as a base for a Mix & Match set you extend with bottom sections.
  • Adjustable handle — with length stages for more flexibility. Biothane comes as 2-step adjustable, leather and rope as adjustable.

If you want to walk hands-free, there's also:

  • Crossbody leash — as 3-step adjustable (leather/Biothane, ~2 m) or 2-step adjustable (rope, ~2.50 m). Wearable across your shoulder.

City leashes with fixed length (1.20 m) are an own product category – the finished city leash, not a Mix & Match component.

2. The bottom section (swappable part)

The bottom section connects the handle to the collar or harness. With us there are four material variants — you can even mix them:

MaterialAvailable widthsCharacter
Rope8mm, 10mmSporty, braided, soft in the hand
Oil-tanned leather10mm, 15mmClassic, refined, develops beautiful patina
Cotton rope(one thickness)Natural, soft
Macramé(one thickness)Decorative-knotted, boho look

Tip: The mix logic lets you e.g. combine a leather handle with a rope bottom — looks refined but feels sporty-functional.

More on length in our leash length guide.

3. The collar

The matching collar completes the set. With us: in four materials and three style worlds — simple or braided, wide or narrow. More details:

Step by step: build your own set

You're convinced but don't know where to start? Here's your 5-step roadmap:

  1. Analyze your everyday. Where do you mostly walk (city, woods, beach)? What's the typical weather? Do you need a hand free (stroller, bike, coffee)? Your answer determines material + length.
  2. Choose your base (handle). City person → short handle (Kurzführer) as compact base. All-rounder → 2-step-adjustable handle (Biothane) or adjustable handle (leather/rope). Nature lover → crossbody leash for hands-free walking (3-step leather/Biothane ~2m or 2-step rope ~2.50m).
  3. Determine your material. Outdoor & water → Biothane. Style & sporty → rope. Classic & refined → oil-tanned leather.
  4. Pick your style world. Boho Chic (earth tones), Pastel Dreams (pastels), Colour Clash (bold). More below.
  5. Plan your bottom sections. Starter recommendation: 1× bottom in your favorite material in matching width. Optional: a second bottom in a contrasting material (e.g. rope + leather) for more variation.

Pro tip from the pack: Start with a complete set (handle + collar + 1 bottom section) in your favorite color. Then expand step by step — the set grows with your wishes ♡

The 3 style worlds

Before diving into materials and lengths — pick your color world first. Within a world everything matches, but you can also mix worlds.

Example combinations for every occasion

The all-rounder (city + park)

Setup: 2-step adjustable handle (1.30 / 2 m, Biothane) + bottom 60 cm (Biothane) + simple collar.
What you do with it: City mode = handle only (1.30 m). Park mode = handle + bottom (2.60 m).
Perfect for: The 80% everyday, all-round flexibility.

The outdoor pro

Setup: 3-step adjustable crossbody leash (2.50 m, Biothane) + long bottom (100–120 cm) + wide collar.
What you do with it: Hands-free hiking, recall training with the long bottom, by the lake without worrying about the material.
Perfect for: Nature lovers, active dogs, all-weather.

The style pro

Setup: Fixed handle in Boho Chic (sage, rope) + bottom in Pastel Dreams (pink) + braided leather collar.
What you do with it: Mix style worlds intentionally — the material mix rope + pastel look is a real eye-catcher.
Perfect for: Fashion-forward, Insta-ready, bold statement looks.

The multi-dog family

Setup: 2× adjustable handles in different colors + 1× bottom as flexibility booster.
What you do with it: Both dogs have their own base, the bottom switches between them as needed.
Cost benefit: Instead of 6 separate leashes, just 3 building blocks + 2 collars.

The 5 benefits of the Mix & Match system

  • Flexibility without closet chaos. One base, many looks. You don't need 5 leashes for 5 occasions.
  • Cost benefit. 1 handle + 3 bottoms is cheaper than 3 complete leashes — and you have more variations.
  • Sustainable. If a part wears out (rare), you replace just that one. The handle often lasts 10+ years.
  • Style variability. Summer look in pastels, autumn look in Boho Chic, festival look in Colour Clash — all from the same base set.
  • Grows with your dog. Puppy growing into a young dog? You only swap the bottom or collar. The handle stays.

FAQ — Mix & Match dog leash

Does the carabiner connection really hold safely?

Absolutely. We use only load-tested brass or stainless-steel carabiners, each matched to the leash width and force. Even with a 35 kg German Shepherd at full speed, the system holds rock-solid. Tested by Rudi personally (= pulling, chewing, sniffing).

Can I mix different materials?

Yes, all our Mix & Match components are compatible — whether Biothane, rope or oil-tanned leather. Just watch matching widths on the carabiner — that's noted on every product.

Can I mix style worlds?

Definitely. The three style worlds are recommendations, not rules. Sage (Boho Chic) + candy stick (Colour Clash) is a deliberate stylistic break — and looks really good. Insta-tip: material mix + color mix = guaranteed eye-catcher.

How do I switch components?

Open or click the carabiner, unhook the old bottom, hook in the new one, done. Time required: 3 seconds. Skill level: if you can put a key into a lock, you can do this :-)

Can I add components later?

Of course — that's exactly the point of the system. Start with a set, add a new bottom in a different color after 6 months, eventually a second handle in another style world. Your set grows with your wishes ♡

How do I care for my Mix & Match setup?

Depends on the material: Biothane just wipe down, rope washable at 30°C, oil-tanned leather clean with a damp cloth. A mixed setup is even practical — Biothane handle barely needs care, the dirty rope bottom you simply wash out.
