Dog Leash Length: 1.20 m to 10 m – The Complete Guide

Dog Leash Length: Why the Right Length Matters

In short: Leash length decides how much freedom your dog has and how much control you keep. There is no single "perfect" length – it depends on the situation, your dog's size, and how well-trained they are.

Too short and your dog can't move freely. Too long and you lose control in the city. The good news: with the right system, you don't have to choose just one – you have the right length on hand for every situation.

This guide gives you a complete overview of every common dog-leash length from 1.20 m to 10 m, with clear recommendations for when each length makes sense – plus a sizing table by dog size and a material cheat-sheet. At the end we answer the ten most-asked questions.

Which Leash Length for Which Dog Size?

Dog size affects not only the width but also a sensible length and material strength. Here's a quick orientation table:

Dog size / type Recommended everyday length Recommended training length Material tip
Puppy (8–20 weeks)1.20 m (slim city leash)2 m short, later 3–5 mRope 8 mm or slim biothane

Medium dogs 15–25 kg2.00 m 3-way adjustable5–7 m tracking leashBiothane 13–16 mm, waxed leather 15 mm
Large dogs 25–40 kg2.00 m shoulder leash or 2.50 m rope7–10 m tracking leashBiothane 16 mm, waxed leather 15 mm, paracord

Important: For tracking leashes of 3 m or more, always clip to the harness, never to the collar – a sudden stop could otherwise strain the cervical spine.

Which Leash Length for Which Situation?

Instead of a single "perfect" length, there's the right length for each situation. Our recommendations:

  • City centre & sidewalk1.20 m city leash for control and safety
  • Park & meadow → 2.00 m shoulder leash (3-way adjustable) for freedom with control
  • Café & restaurant → 1.20 m or shoulder leash set short, dog lies next to you
  • Hiking → 2.00–2.50 m shoulder leash, hands-free over the shoulder
  • Beach & water → 2.00 m biothane (waterproof) or 5 m tracking leash
  • Recall training → 5–10 m tracking leash, always on a harness
  • Bus, train & car → 1.20 m city leash, close to your leg
  • Puppy education → 1.20 m short for daily life, from month 5 add a 3 m tracking leash
  • Pulling on leash → 2.00 m with the Mix-&-Match system, plus a training setup (see our leash-manners guide)

Material × Length: What Pairs Well?

Not every material makes sense in every length. Here's the rule of thumb from our workshop:

🌿

Rope (Tauseil)

  • 2.50 m shoulder leash
  • Retriever leash
  • Up to 5 m training
🤎

Waxed Leather

  • 1.20 m city leash
  • 2.00 m shoulder leash
  • Premium everyday use
  • Long lifespan
💧

Biothane

  • 1.20 m city leash
  • 2.00 m shoulder leash
  • 1–10 m tracking leash
  • Waterproof, lightweight

Flexible with the Mix & Match System

You don't need a different leash for every situation. With our Mix & Match system, you simply click hand loop and lower section together via carabiner – and switch as the day requires:

  • Morning: short hand loop for the walk to the office (1.20 m)
  • Midday: adjustable hand loop for the play meadow (1.70 m)
  • Evening: hand loop + lower section = shoulder leash for the big park round (2.00 m)
  • Weekend: clip on a separate tracking leash for free recall training (3–10 m)

All components are compatible with each other – rope, waxed leather or biothane, in all three style worlds (Boho Chic, Pastel Dreams, Colour Clash).

Safety & Care at Different Lengths

Three Safety Rules That Actually Matter

  • Tracking leashes of 3 m or more → always on a harness. A sudden stop on the collar can stress the cervical spine – especially in smaller breeds.
  • Never wrap a tracking leash around your hand. Let it run through your hand or wear gloves. Rope burns happen faster than you think.
  • Long leashes only where it's safe. A 10 m tracking leash doesn't belong on a main road. In a forest, field or beach – ideal.

Care Tips by Material

  • Rope (Tauseil): Machine wash at 30 °C (in a laundry bag), air dry.
  • Waxed leather: Wipe with a damp cloth, treat with leather grease every 4–6 weeks – builds a beautiful patina.
  • Biothane: Just rinse or wipe. Dirt, mud and water bead off. Practically indestructible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Leash Length

How long should a dog leash be for the city?

For city use we recommend approx. 1.20 m – either as a city leash or as a Mix-&-Match combo of a short hand loop (60 cm) and a lower section (60 cm). Your dog has enough room but stays close, and you keep control at traffic lights, on public transport or in a café.

Which leash length for puppies?

For puppies, a short 1.20 m leash is more than enough. You keep control and your puppy learns to walk on a leash without straying too far. From the fifth month on, a 3 m tracking leash is helpful for recall training – on a harness, please.

How long should a tracking leash be?

It depends on training level. 5 m is a great starting point for recall training. Advanced dogs benefit from 7–10 m. We offer every full metre from 1 to 10 m – even unusual lengths like 4 m or 6 m if your training calls for it.

Which length is right for large dogs?

Large dogs do well with a 2.00 m shoulder leash in waxed leather 15 mm or biothane 16 mm for everyday use – sturdy, tear-resistant and hands-free. For training we recommend a 7–10 m paracord tracking leash.

Can I change the length later?

Yes! In the Mix & Match system you simply swap the hand loop – short or adjustable – or clip a lower section on or off. All components are compatible with each other, regardless of material or style world.

What's the difference between a 2-way and 3-way adjustable leash?

A 2-way adjustable leash has two length settings (e.g. 1.30 m at hand or 2.50 m over the shoulder). A 3-way adjustable has three (short, medium, long) – the most flexible everyday companion. Both versions are in our shoulder-leash collection.

Is there a legal leash-length limit?

In Germany there is no nationwide rule – it's state-by-state. NRW and Brandenburg, for example, require a leash in built-up areas, often with a maximum of 2 m. In forests and fields specific rules apply per state (April–July nesting season is particularly strict). Always check your local regulations before using a long tracking leash.

Which material for which leash length?

For short everyday leashes (1.20–2.00 m), any material works – it's a question of taste. For tracking leashes from 3 m, we recommend biothane (waterproof, easy to clean) or paracord (extra light). Waxed leather is too heavy for long tracking leashes, and rope soaks up water.

I have two dogs – do I need two leashes?

Not necessarily. A coupler connects both dogs through a Y-split with a single hand loop – great for similarly sized, harmonious sibling-style duos. If the dogs are very different in size or pull differently, two separate leashes are usually more relaxing.

How do I care for my leash so it lasts?

Material-dependent: biothane just wipes or rinses, rope washes at 30 °C, waxed leather wants leather grease every 4–6 weeks. That way every leash lasts for years.
