Leather Dog Collar: Oil-Leather, Sizes, Care & Choice

Looking for a leather dog collar – but overwhelmed by all the terms? Full-grain leather, oil-tanned leather, "genuine leather", split leather – and what does "handcrafted" really mean? Here's the honest guide: what the leather terms really mean, what to watch for when buying, which width and length fits your dog, and how to keep your collar looking great for 10 years. Plus: why we exclusively use oil-tanned leather (Fettleder) at RudisRudel ♡

What is a leather dog collar?

A leather dog collar looks simple at first glance — a piece of leather with a buckle and hardware. But on second glance there are huge quality differences. And you only notice them after 6 months: when one collar still looks beautiful while the other one cracks or dries out.

A good leather collar has three properties:

  • High-quality leather (ideally oil-tanned or vegetable-tanned full-grain leather)
  • Solid hardware (buckle + D-ring + ring made of brass or premium stainless steel)
  • Clean craftsmanship (stitching, edges, hole punches, neat transitions)

And because 95% of leather collars online don't really meet any of these three criteria, it's so important to look closely when buying. What the terms mean and how to spot real quality – we'll get to that next.

Oil-tanned, Full-grain, Genuine — what is what?

This is a quick materials lesson — promise, understandable in 2 minutes:

Term What is it? Quality
Full-grain leatherThe top layer of the animal hide with the natural grain (skin structure). The most stable leather.Premium
Oil-tanned leather (Fettleder)Full-grain leather treated with plant-based oils and fats during tanning. Becomes very soft, water-repellent and needs almost no care.Premium-Plus
Embossed / corrected-grain leatherFull-grain leather with a sanded surface and artificially imprinted grain. Looks good at first, deteriorates fast.Mid-tier
Split leatherThe lower layer of the split hide. Fibrous, less stable, can tear.Low
"Genuine leather" (collective term)Just means: something made of real leather. Could be anything above. Meaningless.varies
Faux / PU leatherPlastic with a leather look. Cracks under stress, smells.not leather

What we use at RudisRudel: exclusively oil-tanned leather (Fettleder). Vegetable-tanned, processed in Southern Germany, butter-soft from the start. It's the best available leather for dog collars — and the main reason our collars still look like new after years.

For more on the material: our Fettleder leash guide — the same properties apply to collars.

What to look for when buying — the checklist

When you buy a leather dog collar online, you can usually identify quality from the material specification, the photos, and the description. Here's our honest checklist:

  • Clear material specification — Does it say "full-grain leather", "oil-tanned" or "vegetable-tanned"? Good. Just "genuine leather" or "leather look"? Be cautious.
  • Visible grain in product photos — Real full-grain leather has an irregular, natural skin structure. Artificially-grained leather looks too uniform.
  • Brass or stainless-steel hardware — Avoid zinc die-cast or plastic hardware. They rust or break.
  • Visible stitching — A double-row stitch in strong thread is a sign of quality. On cheap collars the stitching is often only at the buckle, the rest is glued.
  • Edge finishing — Quality collars have sealed or wax-treated edges. Raw, fraying edges = poor craftsmanship.
  • Maker information — Workshop with an address and a person behind it? Or an anonymous online shop? A real workshop stands behind their quality.
  • Warranty / repair service — Good makers often offer repair services if anything happens to the collar. That's a strong quality signal.

Rudi-approved ✓ — Every collar we ship gets one final manual check by Julia: stitching, edge work, hardware, leather feel. If anything's off, it stays in the workshop. Warning — addictive for dog people who care about details :-)

Which width, which length?

Sizing is more important for leather collars than for Biothane or rope, because leather doesn't "give" if too tight or too wide. Rule of thumb:

Which width?

At RudisRudel we offer three standard widths for leather collars:

  • 10 mm (mini) – ideal for very small dogs under 5 kg, puppies, dachshund-sized. Looks delicate, not overwhelming on a fine neck.
  • 15 mm (slim standard) – the discreet choice for small to medium dogs. Our braided leather collars come in this width.
  • 20 mm (wide standard) – the common choice for medium-to-large dogs. Sturdy, well visible, distributes pressure across the neck.

Which size / length?

Important: the neck circumference. Measure your dog's neck at its widest point just below the ears. Plus 2–3 cm tolerance. For growing dogs, prefer a collar with more adjustability.

Neck circumferenceRecommended size
up to 25 cmXXS (e.g. Chihuahua, very small Yorkie)
26 – 30 cmXS (e.g. small Yorkie, Pomeranian)
31 – 35 cmS (e.g. Dachshund, smaller Beagle)
36 – 40 cmM (e.g. Border Collie, Australian Shepherd)
41 – 45 cmL (e.g. Labrador, Golden Retriever)
46 – 50 cmXL (e.g. German Shepherd)
51 – 59 cmXXL (e.g. Bernese Mountain Dog, very large breeds)

2-finger test: When the collar is on, you should fit 2 fingers comfortably between collar and neck. Too tight = uncomfortable. Too loose = slips over the head.

Care: keeping your leather collar pretty for 10 years

This depends on the leather type. With oil-tanned leather care is almost zero — with regular leather, more.

Oil-tanned leather (what we use)

  • Daily: Just wipe dry or with a slightly damp cloth. That's it.
  • For dirt: Lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, soft cloth. Air dry (not on the radiator).
  • 1× per year: Optionally rub in some leather grease or wax if the leather looks dry. With oil-tanned leather often not even necessary because the oils last a long time.

Classic leather

  • Every 2–3 months: Massage in leather grease. Otherwise the leather becomes brittle.
  • Don't let it get wet: Water makes leather hard and brittle. If wet: dab dry quickly, then grease.
  • Before first use: Apply leather conditioner so the leather becomes supple.

Tip from the pack: Most of our customers don't care for their oil-tanned leather collar at all — and after 3 years it still looks like day one. That's the point of oil-tanned leather: set-and-forget ♡

Leather vs. Biothane — when which?

We get this question often. The honest answer: both have their strengths. Direct comparison:

Braided or simple? Which style fits

With leather collars you basically have two style paths:

Simple leather collar

  • One layer of leather, clean shape, optionally a discreet stitch
  • Works in every life situation — city, country, festive, everyday
  • The standard collar, available with us from €27
  • Best for: classics, all-rounders

Braided leather collar

  • Multiple leather strips braided together — looks elaborate and refined
  • Visually a clear statement, slightly more eye-catching
  • Care identical to the simple collar
  • Best for: dog owners with an eye for detail, Insta-posting, outfit statement

At RudisRudel we have both — braided and simple — in all three style worlds. More on that below.

More than just leather: every collar variant at RudisRudel

A leather collar is the premium choice — but not the right call for every dog. For allergic dogs, water-loving dogs, or pups who need an especially elegant look, we offer other handcrafted collar options. Quick overview:

Macramé Collar (boho look)

Knotted from soft cotton rope, in warm earth tones or soft pastels — the macramé collar is the textile sibling of the leather collar. Particularly popular for small and medium dogs in the boho-chic style – light material, gentle on the neck. Machine-washable at 30 °C.

EM-Ceramic Collar (natural insect repellent)

A special version of the macramé collar: the EM-Ceramic collar features knotted-in EM-ceramic beads. EM stands for "Effective Microorganisms" — the material is used in natural pet care as a natural contribution to insect defence (ticks, fleas). A beautiful option if you want to avoid chemical tick collars. Style: Boho Chic.

Rope & Leather Combination

The best of two worlds: cotton rope in boho look paired with an oil-leather closure. Low-maintenance like rope, premium like leather. Available in 15 mm and 20 mm leather widths across all three style worlds.

Rope Collar (Tauseil)

Fully braided from cotton/polyester rope, in widths 6, 8 and 10 mm. Very light, soft and absolutely everyday-friendly — ideal for puppies, small dogs or as a second collar for on-the-go. Maritime in look, often paired with our rope leashes.

Biothane Collar (waterproof)

If your dog loves water, mud or the beach, biothane is the right choice. Our biothane collars are 19 mm wide, available in Boho Chic and Pastel Dreams (plus a Special Edition), practically indestructible and cleaned right in the shower.

Mini Collar (10 mm) — for the smallest dogs & puppies

For toy breeds, puppies or small dogs under 8 kg we offer the Mini Leather Collar at 10 mm wide — same premium build as the standard collar, just slim. Also available in a braided mini version.

Our handcrafted oil-tanned leather collars in the Mix & Match system

At RudisRudel all leather collars are handcrafted by Julia, with vegetable-tanned oil leather and brass hardware. Three style worlds, all combinable with your leashes, bandanas, and the rest of the Mix & Match range.

In each style world you'll find multiple variants: simple collar (15mm/20mm), mini collar (10mm), braided collar (15mm). Plus: we also offer collars made of rope (Tauseil) in 6mm/8mm/10mm — perfect to match a rope leash. The matching Biothane equivalent or rope leash can be combined too.

FAQ — Leather Dog Collar

Will my dog tolerate a leather collar — even with allergies?

Vegetable-tanned oil leather is very skin-friendly and well tolerated even by sensitive dogs. For known leather allergies or very sensitive necks we recommend a Biothane collar instead — that's hypoallergenic and absolutely neutral.

Can I personalize my leather collar — engraving?

At RudisRudel we currently work without engraving. What we do offer: individual length wishes, color combinations from the Mix & Match system, and the choice between simple and braided collars. If you want an ID tag, you can hang it on the D-ring of the collar — works with all our models.

How do I properly care for my leather collar?

Oil-tanned leather: just wipe with a damp cloth, air dry. That's it. Optionally 1× per year apply a little leather wax if the leather looks dry. Regular leather: massage in leather grease every 2–3 months. More in the care section above.

How long does a good leather collar last?

Oil-tanned leather: 10+ years with normal use. We have customers whose first RudisRudel collar from 2023 is still worn daily — and often looks better than day one because the leather develops a beautiful patina.

Which collar size is right for my puppy?

Puppies often grow very fast — we recommend choosing the collar one or two sizes larger and using the adjustability. Once your dog reaches adult size, you can switch to a different width or style anytime. In the Mix & Match system everything fits together.

What's the difference between oil-tanned leather and "genuine leather"?

"Genuine leather" is just a collective term for "something made of real leather" — that can be anything from premium full-grain leather to cheap split leather. Oil-tanned leather (Fettleder) is a specific quality grade: full-grain leather treated with plant-based oils and fats during tanning. That makes it soft, water-repellent and long-lasting. At RudisRudel we exclusively use oil-tanned leather.
